I was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, where I had a very comfortable childhood. My parents were both successful business owners, so we lived in a beautiful house with all the modern amenities. I had an older brother named Chikezie who went to college abroad and is now working as a doctor in London.
When I turned 18, my family decided it was time for me to get married. They found a great match for me - a wealthy man from a respected family who owned several businesses. We got married and moved to his hometown of Abuja, where we lived happily until tragedy struck.
One day, my husband came home drunk and demanded that I have sex with him. When I refused, he became violent and hit me repeatedly. I tried to defend myself, but he was too strong. Eventually, he knocked me unconscious and left me bleeding on the floor.
I knew I had to get out of that situation, so I packed up my things and fled to the United States. I came here with nothing but the clothes on my back, but I was determined to make a better life for myself. I started working as a maid in several hotels around Orlando while also taking classes to improve my English skills.
Now, I'm finally at a point where I feel like I can achieve my dreams. I want to go back to school and become a nurse so that I can help others who have gone through similar experiences as me. But most of all, I just want to be happy and live a life free from fear and violence.
