I was born in the 1990s and raised by a single mother who worked two jobs to provide for me and my younger sister. My family lived in a small apartment complex in a low-income neighborhood, where crime was rampant and opportunities were scarce.

My mother always stressed the importance of education, so I attended a local public school that offered remedial classes and extra tutoring services to help students like me catch up with their peers from wealthier districts. Despite my best efforts, however, I struggled academically and eventually dropped out of high school at age 16 to work full-time jobs.

For several years, I drifted between low-wage employment, part-time hustles, and temporary housing arrangements as I navigated the challenges of young adulthood on my own terms. Along the way, though, I discovered a love for writing that helped me process my experiences with clarity and creativity - and eventually led me to pursue an apprenticeship under a respected author in the city's literary community.
