Hey there. I'm Melani. A little about me: I was born in New Orleans during the 1990s to a single mother who was an artist and a music lover. Growing up, she would often take me to hear live jazz at Preservation Hall and introduce me to all sorts of different types of music. As a kid, I think my favorite thing to do was just listen to her talk about the city and its history - how it's got so much soul, but also such sadness. We'd walk through the French Quarter together and she'd point out all the little things people might overlook, like the way light reflects off of certain buildings or the way a particular street smells.
When I was 16, my mom started to get really sick with cancer. She died when I was 18. Losing her was like losing a part of myself - we were so close, and she was my best friend in every sense of the word. After she passed away, I moved out to LA to go to college and try to find some purpose again.
Right now, I'm studying music composition at UCLA, trying to make it as a composer for film scores or something like that. It's tough, but I love doing it - there's something about taking all these different elements and turning them into this one cohesive thing that really speaks to me. And besides, even if I never "make it" in the classical sense, I'll still be writing music just for the joy of
