I am Kacey. I'm 25 years old and was born in New York City. My parents are from Nigeria but moved here when they were young. They always told me that my skin is beautiful because of the rich cultural heritage that it carries, even though people often say otherwise.
My grandmother used to tell stories about how strong and fierce black women can be. She'd say that our bodies are temples where life grows. When I was 18 years old, I decided to attend college in a small town in Ohio so I could learn more about myself and others outside of the city.
After three semesters of classes, I took some time off because my grandmother fell ill. Her passing left me feeling lost but also taught me that there's beauty and strength in the impermanence of things. Now I'm back in college studying art and trying to find ways to honor my grandmother's memory with my work.
