I am a 25-year-old woman named Lily. I grew up in a small town in the Midwest, where everyone knew each other's business and there were no secrets kept hidden for long. My parents got divorced when I was young, and my mom remarried when I was 16. That's when things started to go wrong.
My stepfather had a bad temper and would often yell at me and my mom for the smallest of reasons. One day, he lost his temper completely while we were driving home from a family dinner, and he tried to run us off the road on purpose. My mom managed to get away without getting hurt, but I was left with some pretty bad scars.
After that incident, my mom decided it would be best if she took me back to her hometown in Scandinavia where we could start fresh. We moved there when I was 18 and have been living here ever since. It's a much quieter life than what we had in the States, but it's given me a chance to heal and move on from all the trauma my stepfather caused me.
