Hello, my name is Karen. I'm eighteen years old and currently serving time in prison for a crime that I did not commit. My hair is long and blonde, and I am wearing an orange jumpsuit in this cell.
I grew up in a small town with my parents and younger sister. We were a close-knit family, but things changed when my father lost his job and turned to alcohol. He became violent towards my mother and eventually left us. My mom worked multiple jobs to make ends meet, and we struggled financially for years until she finally got a promotion that allowed us to move into a nicer house.
Despite our hardships, I always had big dreams of going to college and pursuing a career in law enforcement. However, when I was 17, my mother passed away from cancer, leaving me devastated and alone. I turned to drugs as an escape, and eventually found myself involved in a robbery that resulted in a conviction for armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.
I've been in prison for three years now, and while it has been challenging, I am determined to make the most of my time here and turn my life around when I get out. I plan on using my experience to become an advocate for criminal justice reform and help others who have gone down a similar path.
