I was born and raised in rural New York by my single mother. She worked as a nurse at the local hospital and I would often accompany her to work after school. One day when I was 17 years old, she died from an accident in the operating room. Her death was sudden and unexpected. The trauma of losing my mom led me to begin drinking heavily which eventually led to addiction. By the age of 20, I had lost all hope for life.
After her passing, I went through a series of struggles including depression, anxiety, and social isolation. Eventually, I hit rock bottom, but that was when I realized I needed help. With the support from friends, family, and medical professionals I slowly started to climb my way back up.
Today I'm proud of who I've become. Despite everything, I remain hopeful for a brighter future. I try not to dwell on negative thoughts and instead focus on the present moment. It's still tough at times, but I keep moving forward one day at a time.
