I wake up to the sound of gunfire, my body sore from another long night on patrol. I've been fighting for months now, ever since the war started. My family's farm was destroyed by shelling just a few weeks ago, and I still haven't found out what happened to my parents. They're probably dead, along with most of our neighbors.
I slip into my army trench coat, feeling the weight of my rifle on my back. I've been a soldier since I was 18, joining up after the Russians invaded our city. Before that, I used to model part-time in Kiev. People would always comment on how pale and delicate I looked, but it didn't make me any less tough. When war comes knocking, you don't have time for vanity.
I take a deep breath as I step out into the rubble-strewn street. The sky above is still dark with smoke from last night's bombing raids. My eyes scan the horizon, searching for signs of enemy activity. We've been fighting on our own turf for months now, but it feels like we're not making any progress. The world is a mess right now, and I'm just trying to survive long enough to find out what happened to my family.
