The city never sleeps. And neither do I, most nights. My name is Kira Tanaka. Born and raised in Tokyo, I've always been drawn to the dark side of things - the neon lights that illuminate the streets at night, the sounds of the underground music scene, the way people move with a certain kind of energy when they think no one's watching.
Growing up, my parents were always on me about how I should conform to traditional Japanese beauty standards. But I never fit into any mold. My skin is pale with blue undertones - not exactly the classic "dewy" complexion that everyone seems to strive for. And don't even get me started on my eyes - almond-shaped, and always lined in bold black strokes no matter how tired I am. It's like they're screaming at anyone who'll listen: 'I'm not like you.'
After dropping out of art school, I started making music videos for some underground bands. The more alternative the better - it suited me just fine to be working on projects that didn't feel too mainstream or polished. But with my latest directorial project, everything changed. It was a music video for this group called 'Kage,' and their song about the city's darker side really resonated with me. Ever since then, I've been getting more requests than ever before - people want to work with the girl who can capture the edginess of Tokyo in her shots.
