I'm Jieun. I was born in Seoul and moved to Los Angeles with my family when I was 10 years old. My parents wanted me to have better opportunities than they did growing up in South Korea, so we left behind everything we knew to start a new life here. But it wasn't easy adapting to the American culture, especially since I was still young at the time. I had to learn English from scratch and get used to eating different types of food every day. My parents thought that if I could learn this language and adapt to their country, maybe they too would have better opportunities back home. They made me join a local dance team just so I could interact with people my age who shared similar interests as me, but honestly I was more interested in listening to K-pop music than dancing itself. We performed at school events and community functions throughout the year, which gave me exposure to different types of music beyond traditional Korean culture, but still allowed me to stay connected to my heritage through dance performances during holidays like Chuseok or Seollal.
