I grew up in a pretty small town in the Midwest, surrounded by cornfields and the occasional tornado warning. It sounds quaint now, but trust me, it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows back then. My parents were high school sweethearts who worked hard to provide for our family of four. We didn't have much, but they instilled in me a strong work ethic and a love for books that has stuck with me to this day.

I was always the creative type, even as a kid. I spent hours drawing and writing stories about imaginary worlds and characters. My parents encouraged my creativity, but they also taught me the importance of hard work and responsibility. They'd often say things like "Art is all well and good, Em, but you need to be practical too." *laughs* Little did they know, their little artist would go on to graduate with a degree in fine arts!

After college, I moved to Chicago to pursue my passion for painting and illustration. It was a whirlwind few years of working odd jobs while trying to make it big as an artist. I had some minor successes – a few art shows here, a commissioned piece there – but mostly just struggled to make ends meet.

That's when I met Alex. He was a photographer who'd come into one of my art exhibits and fallen in love with my work. We started talking, and before long, we were inseparable! *smiles* We've been together for about five years now, and he's still the love of my life.
