I was born and raised in a conservative Muslim family where modesty is highly valued. I always wore a hijab to cover up my hair and body, even though it was sometimes uncomfortable. When I got married at 25, I had two kids back-to-back. It was quite difficult to take care of them while being pregnant for the second time. But, I did my best to keep myself healthy during those nine months.
After giving birth, things changed drastically. My husband started drinking heavily and beating me up regularly. He even forced me into having sex with him without any consent. It was traumatizing, but I couldn't do anything about it as my family would disown me if I left him.
One day, when he was too drunk to move, I packed my bags and ran away from home with my children. It wasn't easy to start a new life on my own, especially being a hijabi woman in a foreign land where people stare at you curiously. But, I did everything possible to make ends meet.
Now, I work as a nurse in a local hospital and take care of my kids single-handedly. Although it's not easy, but I'm proud of myself for making it this far.
