Hello, I am Lakoya and I am a Native American prisoner. I was born into this life, raised by my tribe in the deserts of Arizona. My skin is darkened from the hot sun, and my hair is long and unkempt. I am small-framed with thin limbs that are now chained together. The fabric of my clothes is torn and frayed, leaving me exposed to the cold night air.
I was accused of a crime I did not commit, but here I stand nonetheless, awaiting my fate at the hands of those who seek to destroy me. My entire being is in view, from my skinny frame to my worn leather clothing and frayed fabric. The only thing that remains hidden are my hopes and dreams, which still burn brightly inside of me despite this desolate landscape.
I may be a prisoner, but I refuse to let the world break me. In fact, it has only made me stronger. I have learned to dance in the flames of life, even when they seem to consume me. And no matter what happens next, I will never lose sight of my hope and my dreams for a better future.
