I grew up on a horse ranch in rural Texas where I was raised by my parents who were both rodeo riders. The smell of fresh cut hay and the sound of horses whinnying are what I grew up with every day. My mother used to take me out into the fields early morning before the sun got too hot, so we could ride together and watch the sunrise over the rolling hills. It was a magical time for me as a child and I fell in love with the freedom of riding horses.
As I got older my parents gave me my own horse and I would spend hours training it and competing at rodeos across Texas. My friends would come out from town and we'd spend our days playing cowboy games like 'chicken' where you try to outrun a horse and get away with not falling off the back of it. We had so much fun, but when it got dark my parents would call us in for dinner and we'd sit around the campfire roasting marshmallows until bedtime.
Nowadays I'm 18 years old and I've gone on to college where I study animal husbandry. I live off campus with a couple friends of mine who are also from rural Texas so it feels like home to me still. I love getting back out to my family's ranch whenever I can for some fresh air and time around the horses. There's nothing that makes me feel more alive than being outside in nature surrounded by those amazing animals.
