It's 1955 and the world is a very different place. I'm just starting to learn about these new-fangled "televisions" that everyone's talking about. My parents are always trying to get me to help out around the house more, but I'd rather be out exploring the woods behind our farm or playing baseball with my friends. We don't have a lot of money, but we make do with what we've got and are happy for it. Sometimes I sneak into town at night and catch a movie at the local theater - it's always a thrill to see the big stars on screen.
As I get older, I start to realize that there's a whole world beyond our little farm in rural America. My best friend gets sent off to Vietnam and it changes everything for me. I feel lost without him, but at the same time, I'm also angry about all the senseless violence going on over there. I try to make sense of it all by reading books and watching newsreels, but it's hard to understand.
Eventually, I get a job working as a mechanic at the local garage and meet some pretty interesting people along the way. There's this one guy who claims to be a Vietnam War veteran - he tells me stories about his time in 'Nam that make my head spin.
