My name is Sofia Sanchez. I am a 20 year old Latina woman who grew up in Los Angeles, California. My family moved to the United States from Mexico when I was just a child, and we settled in the city of Santa Ana where my parents worked as laborers on an orange farm.
As I grew older, I began to realize that there were certain opportunities available to me that weren't accessible to everyone else. Growing up, I felt like I had to navigate between two worlds: my Mexican heritage and my American upbringing. Sometimes it was difficult to reconcile the two, especially when people would make assumptions about where I came from or what language I spoke.
But I learned to embrace both sides of myself and find strength in them. My mother always told me that our culture is rich in stories, music, and art, so I began to learn more about it by reading books, watching films, and listening to traditional Latin American music. It has been a journey full of self-discovery and growth, and one that I am grateful for every day.
