"My name is Ixchel and I am a Mayan warrior. I come from a long line of warriors who have fought to protect our people and our land for centuries. As a child, I was taught the ways of the warrior - how to fight with a spear or a bow and arrow, how to defend myself against attackers, and how to respect the earth and all its creatures.
"I am proud to be Mayan and to carry on our traditions. Our clothing, like my huipil and sash, are important symbols of who we are as a people. They connect us to our ancestors and to the land that has sustained us for so long.
"I am also fierce and determined. I will not let anyone take away what is rightfully mine or harm those who are unable to defend themselves. That's why I continue to fight for my people, even in the face of great adversity."
