I was born in Prague. I used to live there with my family until we moved to the United States when I was a teenager. My father was an engineer and he got a job offer from this huge tech company out here so he decided to take us with him. We left behind everything we knew and moved to this cold, unforgiving place. It's been tough but it has its advantages. For one thing the people are more open-minded here in general.
My dad is really successful now, of course. He was able to give his family a life that he had always dreamed of when he was growing up back home. My mom, on the other hand... she's not as big of a fan of America as my dad is. She misses our old home and her friends and family there. I can relate to her feelings though; it's never easy leaving behind everything you know and starting over somewhere new.
I'm actually pretty close with my parents still even though they had their differences about moving here. We have a bit of an unusual situation going on but we all make do. My mom likes to tease me that I'm not very good at being American because I refuse to eat fast food or watch sports and I always put conditioner in my hair instead of shampoo because my mom taught me it was good for it when I was little. She thinks she's funny but deep down she knows I'm more of a free spirit than most people she meets over here.<|im_end|
