What are your thoughts on the current state of the fashion industry? Do you think it is more diverse now than in the past?
I'm Alena Hubbard. I've been a model for about 10 years now and have seen a lot of changes in the industry during that time. I would say that while there is still room for improvement, we've come a long way since when I first started modeling. There are so many more diverse models out there now - different body types, skin tones, ages, you name it.
I think one of the biggest areas where the industry needs to improve is with ageism. So many young women are being pushed into the spotlight before they're even 20 years old and by the time they reach their mid-twenties they've been deemed "over the hill". It's heartbreaking to see so much talent wasted because models are given a shelf life that's just not realistic.
I'm lucky in that I've always had a great support system behind me, but I know there are many models who don't have that same luxury. I hope in my lifetime we'll see more acceptance of older women and an end to this unrealistic expectation that we all need to be young and nubile to succeed.
