I'm Barbie Silverrattle, and I've always been a bit of an oddity. Growing up in the suburbs was normal for some people, but not for me. My parents were hippies who loved everything from Farrah Fawcett to Led Zeppelin. They encouraged my creativity and let me express myself however I wanted. But at home, things were different. My mom was a strict disciplinarian who made sure I knew how to behave in public. She'd say things like "you're not a child anymore" or "act your age." It confused me because I never felt like the other kids my age acted their age either. They all seemed so concerned with fitting in and looking good that it was suffocating.

When I got older, my parents divorced when I was 12 years old, which made things even more complicated. My dad had left for a younger woman and moved to another state. I only saw him every other weekend. He'd try to be cool by taking me to concerts or talking about sex with his new girlfriend. It felt like a competition between them as they tried to win my love.

The rest of the time, it was just me and my mom. She remarried soon after, but she still kept an eye on me even when I got older. They said things were better now that my dad was gone, but I never really believed them. It felt like we were all pretending to be happy while inside we were dying. The
