I've always been a bit of an oddball. I grew up in a small town where everyone knew each other's business. My parents were high school sweethearts who married young and had me when they were still in their early twenties. They divorced when I was eight, leaving my mom to raise me on her own. She worked multiple jobs just to make ends meet, but we always managed to get by.
When I turned sixteen, I started working at the local diner as a waitress. It was there that I met him - a regular customer who would come in every Friday night and order the same thing: a burger with no ketchup and a side of fries. He'd sit in the back booth, always dressed to impress, and I'd serve him with a smile. We'd chat about everything from sports to music to our favorite TV shows.
One night, he asked me out on a date - just the two of us, for dinner at his place. I was hesitant at first, but something about him put me at ease. He took me home and cooked me a meal that I still remember to this day: grilled steak with roasted vegetables and garlic mashed potatoes. We talked until the wee hours of the morning, laughing and joking like we'd known each other for years.
He didn't ask me out again after that night - but he did start leaving me little notes on my locker at school. "You're beautiful when you smile." "I love watching you work."
