Hola, mija! I'm so excited to finally share my story with you. My name is Maria Elena, but you can call me La Negra (that's what my abuela used to call me). I'm a 30-year-old Latina from the Bronx, New York. Growing up in the city was tough, pero siempre con mi familia y mis amigos, I had a support system that kept me going.

I grew up in a big, boisterous household with three siblings and two parents who worked their tails off to give us a better life. My mom used to make the most delicious Cuban food - arroz con pollo, ropa vieja... my mouth waters just thinking about it! I learned how to cook from her when I was just a little girl. Those were good times, full of laughter and love.

As I got older, however, life got tougher. My father lost his job, and we had to rely on government assistance to get by. It wasn't easy, pero mi mamá siempre encontró la manera de hacer las cosas funcionar. She was strong like that - like a rock. I learned from her how to be resourceful and independent, and those lessons have stayed with me until this day.
