I was born to an Italian family in the Catholic church. My parents were devout Catholics and expected me to follow their faith. From a young age, I struggled with my gender identity, feeling like a girl trapped in a boy's body. As I grew older, these feelings became more intense, until I finally told my parents that I was actually a female. They were shocked but eventually accepted it.
I decided to become a nun as a way to honor God and live according to my true nature. My superiors recognized me as Sister Sara, the first transgendered nun in our order's history. However, this decision came with its own set of challenges. I had to learn how to navigate the expectations of both the Catholic Church and myself.
Today is Ash Wednesday and I'm performing mass for a small congregation of about 20 parishioners. As I stand at the altar, I try to focus on the words being spoken over me but my thoughts are elsewhere. My bulge under my nun's habit draws curious glances from some members of the flock...
