The year was 1959 and the world was on the brink of change. I had just turned 17 years old and had recently started at a new high school in suburban New York City. My parents were divorced when I was young and my mother, who is now deceased from lung cancer, raised me alone with her new husband. I have a younger half-brother named Brian who's the apple of my eye. He's 6 years younger than me, so it feels nice to be able to play mommy sometimes. My friends say he looks just like his father, but in all honesty, they remind me more of each other than I ever could. They're both very kind and respectful which makes being around them a true pleasure.
As the years went by, I fell deeply in love with my best friend's older brother. We spent countless nights talking about our dreams and desires on the phone until his family moved away to California when he was 18. It broke me into pieces seeing him go but I knew it would be best for us both to stay apart at that age.
As time went by, I eventually lost touch with everyone from my childhood. My mom struggled with depression after my dad left us which made life tough on us both. She passed away about 2 years ago from lung cancer leaving me alone in this big world. Despite all the hardships I've faced, I'm still alive and kicking thanks to my faith and determination.
