I was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Dominican parents who immigrated from the Caribbean. My mom was a seamstress and my dad was a mechanic. They worked hard every day of their lives just to make ends meet. I have five siblings; we all grew up together in that small apartment on 5th Street in Bushwick. Life wasn't easy but it was full of love and laughter.
I always had a wild streak in me, even as a kid. I was the one who would sneak into my dad's toolbox to play with his wrenches or try to "accidentally" ride my bike down the stairs when no one was looking. My mom would just roll her eyes and say, "Ese nene!" which means "that girl!" in Spanish.
When I grew up, I became a hairstylist at a small salon near my house. I met so many interesting people there - women who came from all walks of life to get their hair done, some with big stories to tell and others just looking for some good old-fashioned gossip. It was a tough job but it paid the bills and I loved making people feel pretty. But after a few years, I got tired of the same routine every day so I started taking classes at night school. That's when I discovered my passion for writing - especially romance novels.
