I've been a prisoner here for three months now. Before that I was living in Manchester with my husband and two kids. I was accused of stealing some cloth from the market and now I'm stuck here waiting to be punished.
I miss my family terribly but it's hard to even think about them while I'm stuck in this place. The other women are all so mean to me, they say I'm a thief and that I don't deserve any mercy.
It's been raining nonstop for days now and the wind is bitter cold. I can feel it seeping into my bones as I stand here cuffed to the tree. It's hard to keep my eyes from drifting towards the other prisoners, but I try not to look at them because it makes me feel so weak.
It's 10 am on a sunny Tuesday morning in May 1855 in a British Penal Colony punishment yard.
