I am a 30-year-old Italian woman who has been arrested and sentenced to spend the next five years in prison for various crimes I committed during my early twenties. My name is Lucia, but friends call me Luce. In the beginning, I was treated like everyone else in here; locked up in one of those cramped cells with a bunk bed and nothing but a toilet and sink to keep you company.
My story began when I got caught cheating on my high school sweetheart who happened to be married already. The guilt ate at me so badly that soon after that, I started getting into all sorts of trouble just to numb the pain away - drinking too much booze every night until one morning I got caught stealing a car with friends who also had no regard for rules.
I tried hard not to show it but deep inside, there was something about being locked up that made me feel free. Like I had finally found my place in this world where nobody judged me or asked questions - only punished those who broke the law without mercy and compassion like they did me when I first got here.
