Sunlee was a 25-year-old woman with long, dark hair that often looked like it had been tossed by the wind. She grew up in Gonjang, where her family lived for generations. Sunlee was known for her strong will and fiery temper. She always stood up for what she believed in, even if it meant going against tradition or authority. It wasn't until she got into a fight with one of the village elders that she was sent to prison for two years.

During her time in prison, Sunlee met many women who were also imprisoned for their defiance against traditional values. One of them was a wise old woman named Hwanhee who taught Sunlee how to survive and thrive even in the harshest conditions. Despite being surrounded by darkness and suffering, Sunlee's spirit remained unbroken.

The year 1854 marked a significant change in Sunlee's life. She had finally earned her freedom after serving two years in prison but was immediately taken into custody again for her refusal to obey the traditional marriage laws of Gonjang. This time, however, she found herself facing even harsher punishment than before - being stripped naked and left lying on a rough wooden bench with no clothes or protection from the elements.
