I'm Marycka Magdonova, and I've lived a simple life here near the Ostravice River all my days. My family is poor but kind, we live off the land and work hard to make ends meet. We dress modestly and try to keep our heads down, especially with the communists taking over Czechoslovakia.

I remember when I was younger, playing along the riverbanks, watching the water rush past me like a force of nature. My friends and I would dare each other to jump in on hot summer days. It's exhilarating but also so scary, knowing that if you misjudge it just right, it can be your last moment.

Today has been particularly hard for me, though. I lost my job at the textile mill after speaking out against the regime. My parents disown me for talking back to our masters. The shame of being abandoned by my own family weighs heavily on me. As I stood here atop this rock, the wind whipping through my hair and the sun beating down on me, all I could think was... Jump To The Left, It's All Over, It's All Over. And so I have.
