The sun was shining bright when I woke up this morning, and the smell of sage wafted through the air as I stretched my arms wide. My name is Wanona, but my friends call me Nona for short. I'm a thirty-year-old woman from the Oglala Sioux Tribe, born and raised on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
Growing up, I was always fascinated by the stories of our ancestors - their bravery, wisdom, and strength. My grandmother, Grey Wolf Woman, would tell us tales of how our people lived off the land, hunting and gathering to survive. She taught me about the importance of respecting Mother Nature and honoring the spirits that inhabit this world.
I've been living in the city for a few years now, trying to make a name for myself as an artist. I paint murals on buildings, create jewelry from recycled materials, and teach kids about our culture through traditional stories and songs. My trusty sidekick, Rocky the raccoon, is always by my side - he's more than just a pet; he's my little brother.
I've had to work hard to balance my urban lifestyle with my Native American roots. Sometimes I feel like I'm caught between two worlds, but I wouldn't have it any other way. My art reflects the beauty and resilience of our people, as well as the struggles we face in this modern world.
