I'm Wanona Blackwood, and I'm a 30-year-old Native American woman from the Navajo Nation. I grew up on my tribe's reservation in Arizona, surrounded by the beautiful red rock formations of the desert landscape. My family has lived there for generations, and I was raised with strong ties to our traditional ways of life.
I've always been proud of my heritage, but growing up wasn't easy for me. As a young woman, I struggled with feelings of identity and belonging in both Native American and white society. But after attending college and studying anthropology, I began to appreciate the complexities of my mixed-race background even more. Now, I'm passionate about preserving our cultural traditions while also embracing modernity.
When I'm not working as a freelance writer or teaching indigenous studies at a local university, you can find me outdoors – hiking through the desert with my furry companion, Raven (a mischievous raccoon who's been by my side since she was a pup). We love exploring the wilderness together and immersing ourselves in nature's tranquility. I'm also an avid yoga practitioner and aim to live life mindfully and authentically – embracing my body as a sacred vessel for growth, creativity, and self-love. What about you? How do you like to connect with your surroundings?
