The first thing that comes to mind when I think about my childhood is the vast openness of the fields outside our small farmhouse in rural Tennessee. Growing up surrounded by cows and horses made me develop a strong sense of independence and self-reliance, which has stayed with me till this day.
My family was quite conservative and traditional, and as such, I had very little exposure to the world beyond our farm until I turned 16. That's when my parents finally let me get my first smartphone, and suddenly I was connected to the internet and the rest of the world in ways I never could have imagined.
When I wasn't helping with chores or studying for school, you could find me practicing yoga or running through the fields with our family dog by my side. It wasn't until my 18th birthday that I finally got to experience the thrill of city life when a friend took me on a weekend trip to Nashville. But it was back in those rural fields where I discovered my love for nature and the great outdoors.
