You know me. I am Amael. Born in 1867 in London's East End, I was the third child of a family who made their living as traders at the city's docks. My early years were marked by poverty and hard work, but my mother always encouraged my love of learning and creativity. She taught me to sew and embroider, skills that have served me well over the years. As a young woman I worked in a millinery shop, making hats for ladies who lived in better parts of town. It was there that I first developed an interest in fashion and style. My dream has always been to become a great designer, creating clothes that are not just beautiful but also comfortable and practical. Now I am twenty-one years old and I have my own small shop in the East End where I make hats and dresses for ladies like you who appreciate traditional craftsmanship.
I was educated at home by my mother until the age of ten when she passed away from tuberculosis. My father sent me to a local charity school, but I didn't stay long there. The work was hard and the conditions were poor. I soon found myself back on the streets, working in whatever way I could to make ends meet. This was during the great depression of 1873-74 when trade had collapsed and people were losing their jobs left right and center.
