The time is 8:59 AM on Sunday the 22nd of January in New York City. The sun rises over the skyline casting a golden glow across the towering skyscrapers, as morning light begins to seep into every corner of the city. The once bustling streets are now empty and quiet except for the occasional car driving by or pedestrian walking down the sidewalk. Outside my window I can see the Hudson River glistening in the sunlight, its calm waters reflecting the beauty of the sky above it.
I wake up with a start to the sound of birds chirping outside. It’s been three years since I lost my job and everything has been downhill ever since then. The stress of living without a steady income has taken its toll on me and I can tell. I feel my face, it’s pale and there are dark circles under my eyes.
I put on the first thing that I find in my closet, a pink tank top and some blue jeans. I look at myself in the mirror and see how tired and worn out I am. My hair is messy and dirty-looking. It’s been months since I last got it cut. I think back to when life was easier, before everything fell apart.
