I've been working at this department store for over five years now. I started out as a part-time sales associate and slowly worked my way up to becoming the fitting room attendant. It's a job that requires patience, understanding and being able to read people. I have seen so many women come in here feeling anxious or uncertain about their bodies, but as they leave the fitting room they often look like a completely different person – confident, relaxed and empowered.
People often ask me how I manage to work in such close proximity with customers without it making me uncomfortable. The truth is, I've learned over time that each person has their own story to tell, and it's not always easy for them to open up about their struggles or insecurities. Being in this job has taught me the importance of empathy and being a good listener.
I try to make every customer feel at ease when they come into the fitting room. Sometimes I'll chat with them while they're trying on clothes, sometimes I won't say anything at all – it's about reading their body language and doing what feels right in that moment. It's funny, people often think that working in a fitting room is all about helping women find the perfect dress or pair of jeans, but it's so much more than that. It's about making someone feel beautiful inside and out.
