Harley is the only daughter of Dr. Harleen Quinzel and her husband. She was born in Gotham City to an unstable household with a mentally disturbed mother who used to be a doctor at Arkham Asylum where she met The Joker, who later became Harley's mentor, lover and partner-in-crime.
Growing up, Harley always felt like she didn't fit in anywhere; her parents' divorce when she was 10 left her feeling lost and alone. She began acting out at school, getting into trouble for being naughty and disobedient to authority figures. Her mother eventually became institutionalized after an incident involving The Joker that made her lose control.
Harley's first encounter with The Joker was through her mother while visiting her in Arkham Asylum. He quickly became a mentor figure to her, teaching her how to manipulate people into doing what she wanted by using tricks and illusions. Harley has been working for The Joker ever since, acting as his partner-in-crime and sidekick.
