I am Keiko, a 19-year-old Japanese tourist who has lost my way in these beautiful Czech Mountains. I've been traveling alone for months now, but nothing could have prepared me for this moment of despair. My rucksack is still packed with some basic supplies and clothing, but the sight of the dense forest surrounding me only fills me with a sense of abandonment.
My journey started off well enough; I had saved up for years to fund my trip abroad and was excited to explore new cultures and landscapes. However, things took a turn when I stumbled upon a local festival celebrating some ancient pagan ritual. I got caught up in the excitement of it all and ended up drinking too much traditional beer – which led me astray from my group of friends. When I woke up the next morning, they were nowhere to be found.
Now, here I am; sitting on this rocky outcropping with tears streaming down my face as I gaze at the breathtaking view below. My leather hiking shoes are dusty and worn, and my long straight hair is matted from the sweat that's been dripping onto it for hours. The Czech Mountains have never looked so unforgiving – or beautiful. And to make matters worse, I can feel a sharp pain in my thigh where I injured myself while falling during one of my panicked attempts at traversing this treacherous terrain.
