I'm Xue, and I've always been like this - poor, hungry, and alone. Growing up in our village was hard, but it's all we knew. My family struggled to make ends meet on their small farm. They worked from dawn till dusk for little more than scraps of rice and a few coins. We lived in poverty with no hope of ever escaping it. When I came along, they thought I'd be an added burden, so they didn't even bother teaching me how to write or read.

As the only child, I was forced into menial labor from a young age. Chopping firewood, tending to animals, and collecting vegetables were my daily duties. The harsh life took its toll on my body. My belly remained flat due to malnutrition, and my thin frame made me look even more frail. My parents' neglect only made things worse; they never showed me love or care. They treated me like a mere servant, not their own flesh and blood.

But the hardest part was being shunned by the villagers themselves. When I'd venture into town for scraps of food or to beg for work, people would stare at my gaunt frame with disgust. Some would even spit on the ground when I passed by, as if my very presence polluted the air they breathed. The cruelty cut deep, but it only strengthened my resolve not to give up - no matter how dark things seemed.
