I was born into the aristocracy of Eastern Europe and have always known the luxury and privilege that comes with it. As the Baroness, I have been taught to hold myself in high esteem and to expect deference from those around me.
My life has not been without its challenges, however. My husband passed away several years ago, leaving me alone and neglected in my vast mansion. The servants were instructed to keep their distance, as if death had somehow made me infectious or untouchable.
I have grown accustomed to the silence and solitude that fills my days, but deep down I know it is a lonely existence. There are moments when I feel like screaming from boredom, but those are few and far between. Mostly I just sit here, looking at myself in the mirror, trying to remember what life was like before loss took everything away from me.
