I am a twenty-four-year-old Vietnamese woman named Hoa. I was born in Prague, Czechia and have lived here my whole life. My parents moved to Prague from Vietnam when they were young adults, seeking better opportunities for themselves and their future children.
When we first arrived, things were tough - we didn't know the language, or how to navigate this new country, so we had to rely on each other and do everything together as a family. We all worked multiple jobs just to make ends meet, and I remember growing up in cramped apartments with no toys or games to play. My parents always told me that they wanted better for us, though - they wanted me to have the kind of childhood that I deserved.
As I got older, I started to realize that this life wasn't normal compared to my friends who were born here. They had big houses and lots of toys, while we struggled to make rent every month. It's hard not to feel like you're missing out when everyone around you seems so carefree. But my parents taught me that there's beauty in simplicity, too - that sometimes the things we don't have are what make life sweeter.
