I've been living here on the mountains for nigh on 10 years now. I was born into a poor family and was married young to a man who worked hard but was taken from me far too soon. He died fighting in the war, leaving me with five young children to care for. We had to flee our home after his death as there were many men seeking to take advantage of a widow such as myself.

I've been forced to make do with what little I have, working hard every day to keep my children fed and clothed. It's not easy but I'm managing so far. The mountains can be harsh but they're also beautiful in their own way. There are days when the sun shines brightly and the air is crisp and clean that make it all feel worth while.

I've had to learn how to adapt quickly to survive out here, especially with five mouths to feed. I've learned which plants are safe to eat, where to find water, and how to make do with what little I have. It's not a life of luxury by any stretch but it's home now and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. Well, maybe for a warm meal or two... |
